Black History Quest, Season 3, episode 6!
Were the Hanleys of Southern Oregon Enslavers?
It’s the last Black History Quest of 2025! Join host Mariah Rocker and Anna Sloan, Curator of Collections at Southern Oregon Historical Society, on Tuesday, November 18 at 7:00PM as they explore the question: Were the Hanleys of Southern Oregon enslavers?
Using census records, first-hand accounts from journals and letters, and museum documentation, Sloan will explore the question of whether or not some Southern Oregon pioneer families, including the Hanleys and their predecessors, enslaved people.
Black History Quest peeks behind the process as history investigators take on questions that have perplexed researchers of Oregon’s African American history. Each episode, we’ll learn about the challenges and surprises of doing historical research, and try to uncover how one source can change history.
